How to talk about sexual preferences

Discussing sex is easier when both people can choose the timing and depth of the conversation. The aim is to understand each other, not to collect promises or test how far someone will go.

Ask whether it is a good moment

A simple ‘Would you be comfortable talking about what you like and what is off limits?’ makes the choice explicit. If the answer is no, change the subject. Speak in broad terms first and do not send intimate images or detailed descriptions without an invitation.

Separate curiosity from willingness

Being curious about an idea does not mean agreeing to try it. You can distinguish things you enjoy, things you might discuss and things you do not want. Listen without judging or bargaining. Preferences do not have to match perfectly, but nobody should feel they must override a boundary to remain attractive.

Keep the discussion open to revision

People sometimes discover that a preference feels different in practice. An earlier conversation does not replace checking in at the time. Avoid turning private disclosures into screenshots or material shared with friends. If you are not compatible, acknowledge that respectfully rather than treating either person's preferences as a defect.
